Genesis 18:1–10a: Psalm 15 “He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.” Colossians 1:24–28; Luke 10:38–42. Abraham invites three passing strangers to stay and rest before they continue their journey. They reveal a surprise to Sarah, who is preparing food behind the scenes. In the Gospel, sisters Martha and Mary invite the Lord into their home, Martha serving him as Mary visits with him. Let us invite the Lord into our hearts now as we listen to God’s word, praying, like Paul in the second reading, that the word of God may be brought to completion for us.
Domenica 16A Del Tempo Ordinario
When I was provincial treasurer, I had the opportunity to travel overseas. Wherever I visited, I experienced the hospitality of the Salesian communities! Especially, they always treat you to plenty of food! They were generous in spending time, showing me around town as well. So when you travel somewhere that has a Salesian community, just introduce yourself and say that you are from a Salesian parish or school. They will welcome you! The two readings today from the Book of Genesis and Gospel of Luke tell us of the hospitality that Abraham, Sarah, Martha and Mary showed to their guests.
Abraham and Sarah were hospitable when the three guests visited their home. Abraham showed them welcome and treated them respectfully. The guests were delighted to accept his hospitality. He offered to wash their feet and prepared a sumptuous meal for them. In return, they gave Abraham and Sarah good news. The unexpected gift was to have a child in their old age, something neither Abraham or Sarah could have dreamt of. As scripture describe, Abraham is a man of faith who totally trusts in God, God blessing is upon him and the family.
Today’s Gospel of St. Luke describes Jesus’ visit to the family of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Jesus had a wonderful relationship with this family and he often visits them when he is in the region. Martha and Mary always welcome Jesus and treat him respectfully. Martha probably is the eldest among them, and so she is always the one to take care of the hospitality. Today she feels upset because Mary does not help her, but chooses instead to converse with Jesus. Jesus tells Martha that listening to his words is more important than anything else. Jesus praises Mary because she listens to his words and consider anything else is secondary.
We learn from these stories to listen to Jesus’ words, and then practice them by being hospitable to our guests, strangers, and one another. God blessing and grace will be poured upon us.
Have a blessed week!
