Habakkuk 1:2–3; 2:2–4: Psalm 95 “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.” 2 Timothy 1:6–8, 13–14; Luke 17:5–10. Habakkuk, living in a time of strife and violence in his nation, cries out to God, “I cry for help but you do not listen!” How many of us have felt the same way? God appeals to Habakkuk to have faith, assuring him that faith gives hope and life to the just one. Paul tells Timothy that faith and love can be found in Christ Jesus. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples how even a little faith can enable them to work wonders. May God’s word strengthen our faith and give us the courage to trust in the Lord
Domenica 27A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saint WHO?
Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe
Born around 1860, Joseph Mukasa was a high-ranking servant of the king of Uganda. Tall, handsome, and exceptionally athletic, he became a catechumen and was baptized by the White Fathers around 1882. A dedicated and faithful servant, he saved the king from a dangerous snake, and in return the grateful king allowed Catholics to practice their faith more freely. Joseph took the surname Balikuddembe, which means “they are at liberty.”
When the missionary priests had to leave the region, Joseph led the Catholic community, winning the admiration of all those around him. “He was a staunch Catholic convert, unambitious, little in his own eyes, obedient to his superiors, kind to his equals and indulgent to his inferiors. His charity was unbounded: He loved all for God’s sake and tried to consider the interests of others at all times, even at his own expense.”
A new king came to power, and Joseph remained in the royal service. But he fell from favor when he tried to defend a Protestant missionary from the king’s anger. Nonetheless, he was so good, it is said, the king had to spend an entire night working himself into a rage to actually order his death. Even then, the executioner deliberately delayed, expecting a reprieve, which came just a bit too late. Joseph died a martyr in November 1885.
Heavenly Father, through the intercession of Saint Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe, may we use our influence for the good of our neighbor and not for selfish interests.
