Isaiah 25:6-10a; Philippians 4:12, 19-20; Matthew 22:1-14 or 22:1-10. The prophet Isaiah tells of the great banquet the Lord will prepare for his people at the end of time. Paul writes to the Philippians, assuring them that he knows how to live in different sets of circumstances and that I can do all things in him who strengthens me. In the Gospel, Jesus tells a parable likening the kingdom of heaven to a king hosting a wedding feast for his son.
Domenico 28A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saint WHO?
Saint Francis Solano +1610
Known as the “wonder worker of the New World,” Francis was born in Spain in 1549. His gather was a governor. His mother dedicated her son to Saint Francis of Assisi. Educated by Jesuits, he joined the Franciscans when he was twenty. After working many years in southern Spain, including heroic service during a plague, he was sent to South America as a missionary.
En route, his ship was stranded. There was one lifeboat, but Francis refused to take a place in it. Instead, he remained with the slaves who were being abandoned with the ship. He baptized them and stayed to share their lot, taking refuge on a sandbank until recuers came.
His missionary labors took him to present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Peru. In addition to learning a number of new languages, which he did with miraculous success, Francis would often bring his violin along on his visits. (He is often portrayed in art with his instrument.) Not only did his goodness win the hearts of the natives, but he also preached with great effectiveness to the often dissolute Spanish-born population.
Francis died in Lima at the age of sixty-one and was canonized in 1726.
Father of wonders, through the prayers of St. Francis Solano, grant us the words and music to make you known and loved in every place.
