2 Kings 5:14–17: Psalm 98 “The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.” 2 Timothy 2:8–13; Luke 17:11–19. Today we are introduced to two special people. Both have leprosy, but this is not what makes them special. Both are cured by the Lord, but still, this is not what makes them noteworthy. No, what makes them special is that both go out of their way to return to the one who cured them and give thanks. God’s healing touch has changed their outward condition, but their grateful response is a sign of the change within, a mark of their true faith.

Today, October 9, 2022, the Salesians of Don Bosco joyfully celebrate the canonization of the Salesian Brother, Artemides Zatti. Saint Artemides is the first Salesian Brother to be canonized.
In the Roman Martyrology we read of Blessed Artemides Zatti: “a religious of the Society of St. Francis de Sales, who excelled in missionary zeal and, having set out for the impervious regions of Patagonia, for the whole of his life devoted himself in the hospital of that city (Viedma, in Argentina, where he is buried) with supreme generosity, in all patience and humility, to the needs of the needy.”
Artemides (Boretto, Italy, 12 October 1880 – Viedma, Argentina, 15 March 1951) emigrated to Argentina with his family at the beginning of 1897, settling in Bahia Blanca where he attended the parish run by the Salesians. At the age of twenty, he was accepted by Bishop John Cagliero as a Salesian aspirant and entered the house at Bernal, where he was entrusted with the task of assisting a young priest suffering from tuberculosis, from whom he also contracted the disease. Sent for treatment at the San José hospital in Viedma, he met Father Evasio Garrone.
Together with him, he asked and obtained from Mary Help of Christians the grace of being healed, and promised to dedicate his entire life to the care of the sick. In 1908 he made his perpetual profession as a Salesian Coadjutor Brother. He began to look after the pharmacy attached to the hospital and later assumed responsibility for the entire hospital, a vocation he followed for 35 years. He became completely beloved by the people of Viedma and the surrounding regions because of his willingness to do anything, go anywhere on his famous bicycle, day or night, to serve the sick. They called him “the brother of all the poor.” More often than not, his hospital was always ‘in the red’ yet, somehow, he was able to maintain excellent relations with all the financial institutions of the city.
In 1950, Br. Artemides was diagnosed with incurable cancer. His faith shone through: “Fifty years ago I came here to die and I have come to this moment, what more can I wish for now? On the other hand, I have spent my whole life preparing for this moment…” In a true Salesian touch, he even filled out his own death certificate for the doctor!
Saint John Paul II proclaimed him Blessed on 14 April 2002 and Pope Francis listed him in the register of saints on 9 October 2022. St. Artemides, pray for us! – Fr. Tho Bui, SDB, Pastor
