Exodus 17:8–13;. Psalm 121 “Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” 2 Timothy 3:14—4:2; Luke 18:1–8. Persistence is the word of the day today, as each reading teaches the importance of persistence in carrying out God’s will. In Exodus, Moses must persist in raising his arms and holding the staff of God in order for Joshua to defeat the enemy in battle. Paul instructs Timothy to be persistent even when it’s inconvenient. Jesus’ parable features a widow who successfully influences a dishonest judge to render a just verdict because of her persistence. May God’s word inspire us to persist in doing what is right without giving up.
Domenica 29A Del Tempo Ordinario

Saint WHO?
Junípero Serra
Born on the island of Majorca in 1713, Junípero entered the Franciscans at age 16. Frail and undersized but brilliant, he became a professor and preacher. In his thirties, he volunteered for missions in Mexico and spent the next three decades striving to make Christ known to the natives of the New World.
It is said that when Serra arrived in Mexico he was a well-fed and rosy-cheeked teacher. Life in Mexico was a tremendous change, and his health deteriorated. But he accepted an invitation to go to California, where he established numerous missions, in Santa Barbara, Sa, Francisco, and Los Angeles, among many others. Poor health was not his only challenge. Serra had to deal with bureaucratic difficulties as well. At the age of fifty-nine, he walked nearly 2,500 miles to tell the Mexican officials about the cruelty of the governor of California, demanding a replacement.
As Serra’s death approached, a fellow missionary came to see him. The friend arrived to hear him singing the Pange Lingua in a procession and remarked to a soldier that he was, “thank God, much stronger than I thought to find him.” The soldier replied, “Serra is always strong when he sings or when he prays.” Serra died in 1784 and was buried in the Carmel Mission. His motto was Siempre Adelante, “Always Forward.”
Compassionate Father, through the intercession of Saint Junípero Serra, grant endurance to your children, And help them find their styrength in singing your praise.
