Malachi 3:19–20a; Psalm 98 “The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.” 2 Thessalonians 3:7–12 Luke 21:5–19 The prophet Malachi sets the tone for today’s readings with his warning that one day the LORD will destroy all evildoers. Paul addresses the problem that some people, anticipating the end of the world, have stopped working and have become a burden. Jesus speaks of the persecution that awaits. But all three also give hope to those who are faithful, assuring them that they will not be harmed. As we listen to today’s readings, let us consider how we can work to increase the number of those who will receive the Son’s healing rays.
Domenica 33A Del Tempo Ordinario
Dear Parishioners,
Recently, in Nicaragua, the government persecuted the religious institutions by targeting the Roman Catholics of the country. They harassed the worshipers and clergy, arrested them and put them in jail. They shut down the charitable organizations and expelled their workers from the country. Christians in different parts of the world are being harassed and persecuted to this day. Christians will be hated. As Jesus warns us, “…they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name.” (Lk 21:12). Are we lucky to live in our country where Christians do not have to worry about being persecuted, harassed or tortured? Not really, we are persecuted in a different way. The social media and other sources of communication are anti-Christians. They are persecuting Christians by silencing Christian values and morality.
Christians are always persecuted, from the day that our church was established up to our own day. Many Christians were tortured and martyred because they courageously defended their faith and trust in God. Jesus assured that, “You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” (Lk. 21:19). Have faith and trust in God, we will be protected. Christ told us that God will give us a wisdom to answer adversaries, so do not be afraid to defend the truth.
By being faithful to God through our prayers, attendance at Mass, and the exercise of charitable acts, we attune ourselves to God. And so when the adversaries harass or come against us, God will help us and defend us and nothing can disturb us. We have an awesome God upon whom we can trust and rely when we are persecuted.
Let us pray for all Christians throughout the world, especially those who do not have religious freedom or are being harassed and persecuted, that they be not afraid. We ask God to give them the courage to continue to proclaim and witness to the Gospel even their lives are threatened.
Have a blessed week!
–Fr. Tho Bui, SDB, Pastor
