Acts 12: 1-11; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18; Matthew 16:13-19. In the first reading, Peter is arrested and imprisoned. An angel of the Lord wakes Peter from his sleep and leads him out of the prison. Paul writes to Timothy, The time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. In the Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples: Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter says, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus tells Peter that he is the rock upon whom the Church will be built.
San Pietro e Paolo
From the Pastor's Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend we celebrate our Patron Saints, Peter and Paul. Let us pray to Saints and Peter and Paul to intercede for our families, benefactors and church community.
I hope you are following my letters to learn about the story of Saints Peter and Paul. Here is the continuation of the story.
In its early years, the church of Saints Peter and Paul was highlighted by enthusiastic displays of religious devotions of devotees from various parts of Italy. Numerous groups had their special saints and patrons whom they honored on festive occasions. A tactful procedure was established to limit their manifestations. On the occasion of the feast of a particular saint, a temporary place of honor was allocated to the right of the main altar for the display of statues, icons, and banners. These religious statues and artifacts now adorn the several side chapels at the entrance and on either side of the church.
On January 31, 1926, San Franciscans were startled by the banner headline in the San Francisco Examiner: “SS Peter and Paul Church Bombed.” This was not the act of some organized terrorist group. The bombing, and the four others that followed, were perpetrated by a deranged anarchist who carried on a campaign of terror for more than a year. Although the bombings caused little structural damage and left no church-goer killed or injured, the specter of the “mad bomber” would continue to haunt the shadows of the church for the next fourteen months. Finally, the reign of terror came to an end when a police detective shot and killed the bomber as he was lighting a fuse of still another bomb. The dead man was identified only years later when clues pointed to a maniacal sidewalk preacher who had patronized the bars and dives in the Third and Howard Streets area- at that time the armpit of San Francisco. (To be continued).
Happy Feast of Saints Peter and Paul!

Pope Francis on Saints Peter and Paul: “Two great Apostles of the Gospel and two pillars of the Church: Peter and Paul. Today we celebrate their memory. Let us take a closer look at these two witnesses of faith. At the heart of their story is not their own gifts and abilities; at the center is the encounter with Christ that changed their lives. They experienced a love that healed them and set them free. They then became apostles and ministers of freedom for others.
Peter and Paul were free because they were set free. Let us reflect on this central point….
Dear brothers and sisters, the Church looks to these two giants of faith and sees two Apostles who set free the power of the Gospel in our world, only because first they themselves had been set free by their encounter with Christ. Jesus did not judge them or humiliate them. Instead, he shared their life with affection and closeness. He supported them by his prayer, and even at times reproached them to make them change. To Peter, Jesus gently says: “I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail” (Lk 22:32). And to Paul: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4). He does the same with us: he assures us of his closeness by praying and interceding for us before the Father, and gently reproaching us whenever we go astray, so that we can find the strength to arise and resume the journey.” –Pope Francis, Homily on the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, 2021.
