2 Samuel 5:1-3; Colossians 1:12-20; Luke 23:35-43. In the first reading, the tribes of Israel anoint David, their shepherd, as king. In the reading from Colossians, Paul writes of the incredible glory of Jesus, firstborn of all creation., head of the Church, and preeminent over all creation. In the Gospel, Jesus shows his compassion and mercy by assuring the good thief of his entrance into his kingdom.
Saint WHO?
St. Artemides Zatti
Born in Italy in 1880, Artemides Zatti emigrated with his parents when he was 17. Following the lead of an uncle who had established himself in Argentina, the Zatti family were able to make a steady living.
As a young man, Artemides worked in a hotel and at a tile factory. He also helped the parish priest, visiting the sick of the community. At 20, he entered the Salesian seminary. However, for Artemides, who had to leave school at nine and find work, the studies proved difficult. Moreover, he caught tuberculosis from a patient he was caring for. So he was sent to the mountain city of Viedma in hope of a cure
In Viedma, he met Father Evaristo Garrone, a priest and nurse with a towering trust in divine providence. His motto at the hospital was: “He who has little pays little. He who has nothing pays nothing.”: Father Garrone encouraged Artemides to promise Our Lady Help of Christians that he would serve the sick poor for the rest of his life if he were healed. Artemides was healed, became a Salesian lay brother, and eventually took charge of both the pharmacy and the hospital. He wore many hats, and it is said that he was “not only provider of medicine, but was himself a medicine for others by his presence, his songs, his voice.
Kind Father, bless all families who are seeking a better way of life, and help them to find their truest satisfaction in your provident care.
