Daniel 7:13-14; Revelation 1:5-8; John 18:33b-37. Daniel has a vision of one like a Son of Man coming, on the clouds of heaven, receiving dominion and kingship over all creation. In the second reading, John writes of Jesus Christ as the faithful witness who is coming amid the clouds. In the Gospel, Pilate asks Jesus if he is King of the Jews, and Jesus responds, my kingdom does not belong to this world.
Today is the last Sunday of our liturgical year 2024. Next Sunday, we will celebrate the First Sunday of Advent. We celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King today which to indicates that only the kingdom heaven will last forever.
A history of the Solemnity of Christ the King celebration: Pope Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King in 1925. The first World War was ended in November 11, 1918. The war had created bitterness among nations and many powerful countries around the world were trying to establish their supremacy over the rest. The Fascist regime in Italy was gaining grounds and Russia was under the rule of Stalin. Nazism was emerging in Germany. Spain and Portugal were falling into the hands of the absolute powers. While people were in the midst of growing uncertainties, Pope Pius XI wanted to reassure the faithful and the World belonged to Christ and not to any other self-proclaimed powers of the world. Today’s Gospel of John describes that, Jesus responded to Pilate when asked, “Then are you a king?” Jesus answered, “You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”John 16:37.
Because Christ’s kingdom belongs to the truth it has a different origin from those of this world. The kingdoms that we know in this world are governed by human powers who compete, fight, try to dominate others and subdue those who are weaker. Several wars are happening in our world these days. The stronger countries try to tear down and dominate the weaker countries. The devil even tried to trap Jesus into worldly power. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, he asked Jesus to worship him, and, in exchange, would give Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. Jesus rejected this kingship by calling the devil to worship only God alone. Jesus Christ wants to establish his kingdom through love, justice and peace. The world kingdoms that rely on the powers of arms will sooner or later collapse. Only God’s kingdom will last forever, because it has roots in our hearts that no one can take away.
May Christ the King help us to build God’s kingdom in this world by sharing the love of God with one another, advocating for justice, and working for peace.
Have a blessed week!

OUR JUBILEE YEAR!
Our Centennial Celebration and Jubilee Year has begun! On November 9-10, 2024 we began the 100 Year Anniversary of Saints Peter and Paul Church. What a great weekend! The Masses and the Renewal of Wedding Vows were holy and beautiful; both the Saturday and Sunday receptions were packed; the food was great, and the grace of God touched all! Go here for links to photos and videos.
Remember, though, the Jubilee Celebration is for the whole year—see the indulgence granted to us by the Vatican at left! Let us take this year to gratefully reflect on the gifts given to us by God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; to honor those who have come before us, and to preserve our faith and our Church for our posterity!
Who are they?
Guess Who?
Can you recognize this week’s lovely mystery married couple? Last week’s couple were Leo & Marjorie Patane, married here back in 1981.

JUBILEE PLENARY INDULGENCE
On the Occasion of the Jubilee Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Church. The Apostolic Penitentiary in Rome, charged with the granting of indulgences, has designated Saints Peter and Paul Church in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, California as a Vatican recognized site for Plenary Indulgence and has granted a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful who truly repent and are driven by charity under these certain conditions from November 1, 2024 until November 1, 2025. A Plenary Indulgence may also apply, through the faithful’s own sufferings, to the Souls in Purgatory.
WHAT IS A PLENARY INDULGENCE?
An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment for sin the guilt of which is already forgiven, which a properly disposed member of the Christian faithful obtains under certain conditions with the help of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies authoritatively the treasure of the satisfaction of Christ and the saints. Code of canon Law (can. 992). A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in a state of grace, have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. Please pick up a flyer from the tables for all information on how to obtain this wonderful spiritual gift!
