Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord: April 10, 2022

Isaiah 50:4–7: Psalm 22;  Philippians 2:6–11; Luke 22:14—23:56 This year we hear Luke’s account of Jesus’ Passion. Alone among the evangelists, Luke tells the story of the good thief, who acknowledges his sin and asks forgiveness from the Lord before he dies. In Jesus’ response, we hear him promise what in a matter of moments will be promised to us all. Throughout his passion, Jesus continually cares for those needing to be made whole, from the servant whose ear was severed to the mourning women of Jerusalem to the repentant thief, all scenes narrated only by Luke. May we experience the compassion the Lord brings through his tender care.

今天我們看到耶穌騎着驢子慢走進耶路撒冷，受到群眾熱烈歡迎，有人把毛氈和衣服舖在地上，讓驢子走過；許多人揚着棕櫚葉、橄欖葉高聲喊：「賀三納！因上主之名而來的，應受讚頌！」歡呼之聲徹雲宵。可是幾天之後，就在同一城之內，人聲鼎沸：「釘死他！釘死他！」

這段福音使我發生很大的感慨：耶穌願意進入我們的心裏，祂不需要我們像當年的群眾那像高聲吶喊，祂祇希望我們以喜樂的精神，把心交給祂，去關懷人，平靜而誠懇地把每天的工作做好，祂希望常常這樣安安靜靜地在我們的心裏，和我們在一起。

我們生命中也許會像當年的群眾那樣，有一份熱情，可惜這熱情往往很快就消失。為什麼轉變得那樣快？原來在我們心中有一個驚人的事實，我們可以做得最好，但也可以很壞。更可怕的是，這種善惡之間可以是瞬息之間的事，所謂一念之差，籌成大錯。所以我們緊緊地守衛心神，以祈禱、克己、守齋去鍛鍊它，使我們能忠誠無私，堅毅不移地跟隨耶穌。

聖母這天也在耶路撒冷，她要分擔耶穌的苦難，讓我們親近她，她會教我們怎樣和耶穌永遠在一起，怎樣在日常生活中時時和耶穌心連心。

Dear Parishioners,

Today we celebrate Palm and Passion Sunday. St. Luke describes Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus emptied himself and did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at. Why does Jesus sacrifice his life for us? The answer is love. God loves us so much that He sent his only Son to this world to save us.

Throughout this Lenten season, our parishioners meditate on the Stations of the Cross every Friday. Different groups enact the passion of Jesus Christ each week. Some who attended the Stations of the Cross broke into tears because they felt that the suffering of Jesus somehow related to the suffering they have in daily life. Jesus was defending us as he went through the passion and died on the cross. He loves us so much that he was willing to die for us. Jesus told his disciples, “No one has greater love than the one who sacrifices his life for his friends.”

Can we identify the love that we share with one another in our daily life? One example: a mother has two daughters. One day, one of the daughters brought her a child and told her to babysit the child. The mother never returned to take care of her child. The child grew up with grandmother. It was not easy for grandmother to raise the child in her retirement age, since she had to work to support the grandchild. The grandmother loves her daughter and grandchild so much that she would not mind even to sacrifice her life to take care of the grandchild. Only love can motivate the grandmother to care for her daughter and grandchild.

God loves us more than a mother loves her children. Prophet Isaiah tells us, “Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.” (Is. 49:15). Although sometimes we do not love God as we should, God never stops loving us.

Let us spend some time during this Holy Week meditating on the passion and the love of Jesus Christ. And ask ourselves: what we can do to imitate Jesus to love, and sacrifice for, one another?

Easter Memorial Lilies & Hydrangeas: In our Saints Peter and Paul tradition we are offering memorial Easter lilies for sale. There will be people in front of the Church taking your order. Lenten Penance Service: There will be a Lenten Penance Service with individual confession in English, Spanish, Italian, & Vietnamese this Monday, April 11 at 7PM.

Adoration: This week’s Adoration will be on Holy Thursday, following the 7:30PM Mass. The Church will remain open until 10:00PM.

Good Friday: A reminder: Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. That means no meat, and just one small meal. This applies to all of us between the ages of  18 & 59, unless exempt due to a medical reason. There is also the regular second collection on Good Friday for the Holy Land.
