Acts 2:1–11;. Psalm 104; 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Romans 8:8–17 John 20:19–23 . or John 14:15–16, 23b–26. It could be said that the climax of all the readings we will hear today comes in the very first paragraph of the first reading. A strong driving wind . . . tongues of fire . . . speaking in tongues. The Holy Spirit made quite the entrance! But the special effects are only the beginning. With the Holy Spirit, the apostles could be understood by every foreigner, no matter their native language. With the Holy Spirit, we have God dwelling in us, uniting us as one. With the Holy Spirit, we have the fulfillment of Jesus’ parting promise to his disciples, God’s abiding gift to us. Let us be aware of the Holy Spirit within us as we listen to God’s word.
A new community is born!
The tower of Babel is a symbol of humanity's attempts to create a paradise on earth without any recourse to God. After they had eaten the forbidden fruit, and having been banished from Paradise, the man and the woman sought to build a Paradise of their own, from which they endeavored to banish God.
That effort is still going on. We have massive highways, supersonic planes, nuclear power stations, manned space flights. Yet we cannot live at peace with one another.
Pentecost is meant to be a reversal of what happened at Babel. Here we have a group of people who came together, ordinary people with little faith in their own abilities, but great faith in God. They set out to build a 'tower' of a different kind. This tower took the form of a new community, a spiritual stairway to heaven.
On Pentecost Day the apostles set out to build this new community.
They spoke a new language - of love and cooperation - one all people of good will understand. It shines in welcoming faces and is present in the clasp of a hand.
Today is the anniversary of this great event. It is the birthday of the Church, the community of the followers of Jesus. On this day, thanks to the coming of the Holy Spirit, the infant Church took its first steps. It is made up not of saints but of sinners. Down the ages it has had its share of problems and setbacks. But it is still being built.
Part of it is assembled every Sunday. We assemble not as rivals but as friends. Factors which normally divide people - such as class, color, age, wealth - count for nothing in this assembly. Here we are one family under God.
At Pentecost God reversed the disaster of Babel which divided and confused the unity of the human family. The Holy Spirit reveals the one true God to all peoples, and so creates from the many languages of people one voice to profess one faith.
This is the wonderful thing that began on Pentecost Sunday. We not only find shelter in this tower, but are also builders of it. –Fr. Ramon Zarate, SDB, Parochial Vicar (Paraphrased from Flor McCarthy, SDB)
