Exodus 19:2–6a; Psalm 100; Romans 5:6–11; Matthew 9:36—10:8. Running through today’s readings is the theme of dedication. In Exodus, God dedicates the Chosen People as a holy nation. Paul points out that Christ died for us sinners, in the ultimate act of dedication to his formidable mission. In the Gospel, Jesus sends the Twelve out for the first time, instructing them to dedicate themselves to doing all the things they’d seen him do. May today’s readings inspire us to dedicate ourselves in the same way.

Charles Fantoni’s architectural drawing showing the school to be built around the Church. Note also the mosaics planned for the façade, which sadly could not be completed due to the expense.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is continuing the story of Saints Peter and Paul.
The original design of the new church underwent an unplanned dramatic change. To take advantage of the tax-free status of places of worship, a parochial school was built piggyback atop the church. And while today schoolchildren must trudge several stories to their classes, the classroom windows offer spectacular views of the bay and The City.
The total cost of the land, church, and school with their interior furnishings came to $800,000. A very burdensome debt in the Depression years that soon followed!
It was during the twenties that the Salesian commitment to the education and religious training of the young was realized. In 1924, the Salesian Boys Club was born. This quickly became a haven for the numerous children of the area; sports, music, and other social activities thrived.
Five years later, the Salesian parochial school and high school were founded. The school was initially staffed by Salesian priests and brothers; and the Holy Family Sisters conducted catechism classes after school hours. In time, the Presentation Sisters took over the operation of the school. After their departure in 1950 the Salesian Sisters, an order of nuns founded by Saint Mary Mazzarello and Saint John Bosco, staffed the Salesian School, which by the time had become coeducational. (To be continued).
Have a blessed week!
