Isaiah 55:10-11; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9. Isaiah describes the word of God as fruitful, not returning to the Lord until his will is accomplished. Paul writes to the Romans, addressing human suffering and looking beyond it to the promise of heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the sower and explains its meaning.
Domenica 15A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saints WHO?
Luigi Versiglia & Callisto Carvario
Luigi entered John Bosco’s Oratory School intent on becoming a veterinarian but came out on fire for the missions. He went to the Far East, where he gave of himself teaching poor boys. In 1920. against his protests, he was made bishop of Shaoguan, 韶关 China.
In 1929, Luigi ordained Callisto, also a Salesian and an Italian native. Only 26 and already fluent in the native tongue, Callisto was the sole priest assigned to the mission in Linchow 连州.
The next year, after Callisto had come for a visit, Luigi accompanied him back home to Linchow. Their riverboat journey in the company of five young native Chinese was cut short by the approach of a band of armed pirates. Angered when the priests could not produce protection money, the pirates boarded the boat and tried to seize the women in the group. When Luigi and Callisto stepped forward to defend them, the pirates beat them with their rifle butts. They then brought all ashore and announced their plan to kill the priest because of their religion. Luigi and Callisto heard each other’s confessions before they were taken out to the woods and shot.
They were re-buried later in a public procession. That day a local official declared “The Catholic Church is marvelous which gives to society such men whose duty compels them to sacrifice their lives for their spiritual children.”
Merciful Father, through the intercession of Saints Luigi Versaglia and Callito Caravario,
grant me the courage to defend the defensless.
