Numbers 11:25-29; James 5:1-6; Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48. In the first reading, the Lord takes some of the Spirit that was on Moses and bestows it on the elders, and they begin to prophesy. James writes to warn the rich of the judgment coming to those who seek luxury and pleasure, while shortchanging their workers. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks against intolerance, referring to someone who is not a follower who is driving out demons. He says: Whoever is not against us is with us.

We are living in the United States where many ethnic groups and their cultures integrate into American culture. Last week the Chinese and Vietnamese celebrated the Moon Festival. In coming weeks, the Italian will celebrate the Italian-American Heritage Month. Our parish will celebrate the Italian Heritage Festival and Parade on October 13. Our parish alone celebrates Masses in three different languages every weekend: English, Cantonese and Italian. Each of ethnic group is different in culture and value but we mingle very well with each other. Sometimes we mistrust those who are different from us such as races, political ideas or religions. We label them and judge them without taking into account who they are, their cultural stories and the good they do.
Today’s Gospel Jesus reminds his disciples and us to be open minded, unprejudiced and recognized the good in others and in their works. Accept them as who they are. Jesus’ disciples ask, “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mark 9: 38-40). John and his companions are not happy because the other person does not belong to their group but do their mission.
Our Catholic Church is universal. We welcome everyone. Jesus wants us to open our minds and hearts and recognize those who are doing good. Jesus’ disciples are jealous and against others because they have done greater jobs than them. The disciples complain to Jesus who authorizes people outside of their group to use the name of Jesus to carry out the Gospel message by driving our demons and healing the sick. Jesus encourages the disciples not to prevent others who do the good works in God’s name.
A question for us: How do we understand who is with us and who is against us? Sometime, we, Christians, feel that we are the only beloved children of God and people who do not belong to our religion are outsiders who cannot be in the love and mercy of God. Vatican II has changed this view that everyone can have the love and mercy of God. Our Catechism of Catholic Church teaches, “…Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved…” (CCC 1260).
Jesus reminds us to open our minds and hearts to share God’s gifts with others. We should not envy or be jealous but harmonize our differences to practice our Christian faith and encourage others, Christians or non-Christians, to do good.
Have a blessed week!

“The world is an abiding gift of God to us. The fact that we ourselves ARE is an abiding gift of God to us. That we are as we are and can breathe and feel and work is by no means self-evident, but is worthy of adoring wonder. To know this is part of man’s basic consciousness. Constantly to receive oneself from the hand of God, and to thank Him for this, belongs to the essential being of man, of the real man.” Romano Cardinal Guardini “On Gratitude”
