Isaiah 58:7-10; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16. In the first reading from Isaiah, the Lord says to care for others, and then your light shall break forth like the dawn. Saint Paul writes to the Corinthians of Christ crucified. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Domenica 5A Del Tempo Ordinario
From the Pastor’s Desk
When I grew up in Vietnam, my hometown had electricity only for a few hours each night and so the rest of the night my family had to use an oil lamp. To light a large area of the house, the oil lamp had to be on a table or a higher place. Also, we did not have a refrigerator to keep food fresh. We often purchased small amount of food to cook for same-day meals. If we needed to preserve any meat or fish, it had to be marinated with salt and cooked. These are the two elements that today’s readings describe: light should shine and salt should make tasty. Prophet Isaiah and Jesus tell us about the spiritual light and the spiritual salt that we should share with others.
At our baptism, we received a candle which indicated Christ the light. We are called to imitate Christ in our daily life by caring for one another and helping those who are in needs. As Prophet Isaiah reminds us, “Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.” Before Thanksgiving, we invited you to contribute for the homeless by donating clothes, socks and other personal items. You responded generously. Now we have enough personal items to give out to any homeless person. Evidently, we did share our resources like the salt for others.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us, “We are the salt of the earth…” Jesus calls us to be the salt of the earth--that is to witness and evangelize the Gospel message in our daily lives. Last Sunday, our parish confirmed 19 young men and women. During the homily, Archbishop Salvatore invited them to continue to be the light and the salt of the earth by living their faith and serving others. He urged each of them to consider dedicating their lives to others by listening to God’s call, whether to consecrated life or married life, and that their mission is to share the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit with others.
The Salesian Congregation just celebrated the feast of St. John Bosco who had shared Christ the Light and became the salt of the earth by dedicating his entire life to work for young people. St. John Bosco used to say to them, “For you I study, for you I work, for you I live, for you I am ready even to give my life” (Salesian Constitutions, art. 14). He helped to change many young people’s lives and some of them became saints.
We are still in the spirit of the celebration of the feast of St. John Bosco and the Lunar New Year. Let us make a resolution for this year by letting our spiritual light shines through our daily activities and sharing our spiritual salt by what we do to witness the Gospel passage.
Happy Feast of St. John Bosco and Happy Lunar New Year!
