Job 7:1-4, 6-7; 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23; Mark 1:29-39. Job expresses his despair, describing life without hope or happiness. Saint Paul writes that he has no reason to boast—that preaching the Gospel is an obligation. Thus, he offers the Gospel free of charge and has become all things to all, to save at least some. In the Gospel, Jesus touches and cures Simon’s mother-in-law, as well as many others, throughout the whole of Galilee.

SAINT WHO?
Josephine Bakhita; Virgin
+1947
“Josephine was born in Darfur, Sudan, a member of the Nubian Dagiu tribe. She was seven when slave traders kidnapped her. They called her ‘Bakhita,’ ‘the lucky one,’ because the frightened girl could not even remember her name.
She was bought and sold five times over twelve years. One master beat her mercilessly. Another had her tattooed in a particularly painful fashion. When an Italian man bought her and brought her to live in Italy, she encountered the Christian God, a master who had accepted cruel torture and death for love of her. When the family she worked for prepared to return to Africa, she invoked the protection of the Italian law to stay in Italy. She received baptism, taking the name Josephine, and then became a sister with the Canossian Order.
Most of the rest of her life was spent in menial tasks: cooking, cleaning, minding the door. Yet Josephine’s life was imbued with a deep sense of gratitude. When asked what she would do if she were to meet the slave traders who had tortured her, she said, ‘I would kneel down and kiss their hands. If what happened to me had not taken place, how would I have become a Christian and a nun?’
In Later years, she traveled around Italy witnessing to God’s marvels in her life. When she died, after much suffering, those who knew the ‘little black Mother’ already considered her a saint.” –From the Magnificat.
The Feastday of St. Josephine Bakhita is February 8. She is the Patroness of the Sudan, of South Sudan, and of the survivors of human trafficking.
