From the Pastor’s Desk:
LOVE
What makes it impossible for us to love?
- the absence of another.
What makes it impossible for us to love?
- the presence of another.
The "other" is so essential to love, we cannot claim we truly love without someone to love. However, the sometimes difficult "other" can also become and obstacle to our loving.
Jesus' new commandment, "Love one another as I have loved you" therefore, is both an invitation to overcome both our resistance to welcoming others and our tendency to give up on people who, we believe, are "impossible" to be with.
"God is love" reveals that God does not exist in a vacuum, Jesus reveals that God is not alone, but is truly a community of loving persons. God's love is not confined within that community either, but because it is perfect and infinite, God's love cannot but gush forth from that loving community, loving all of us into loving existence.
"God's love has been poured out into our hearts..." so that we too, loved into existence, long to love and be loved. The love of husband and wife is miraculous and wonderfully generous because, like God, their loving relationship brings forth other loving persons into the world.
We have been created by love, to love and be loved. Why then is it difficult for us to love? It's because our love is imperfect. We are not God and so our love needs to learn how to truly love. Our love needs to mature with time. Maturity occurs through a series of changes.
"Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all," was a song we used to hear over the airwaves some time ago and many of us liked that song. However, so many years ahead of that song's time, the Lord Jesus debunked the philosophy of that song. Loving yourself is indeed a valid love and important love, but it is not, according to the Lord Jesus, the "greatest love of all."
"No greater love is there than to lay down your life..." This is Jesus' definition of the "Greatest Love of All." We may need to change "learning to love yourself" as we grow in love and years to "laying down our lives..." as the goal of our loving. How shall we do that? We accomplish this by fulfilling the Lord's command to "Love one another as I have loved you." The measure of our loving will be perfect if we love one another in the same way Christ has loved us - giving up our own lives for others.
And so, if we want to gauge whether we truly love another, we simply should ask ourselves not only "Am I willing to welcome that person into my life and keep giving him/her a chance to deserve my love despite his/her quirks and annoyances?" but more importantly, "Am I ready to give my life for him/her as Christ has laid down his life for me?" –Fr. Choose Life! “...these inherent rights, knowable by human reason, are presented in the Declaration with a definite order of priority. Thus, one’s right to the pursuit of happiness is limited when it deprives another of the right to liberty or life; one’s right to liberty is limited when it deprives another of the right to life. The right to life itself is the foundation of all other rights. Without protection of the right to life, no other talk of rights makes sense.” ––Archbishop Salvatore Joseph Cordileone “Before I Formed You in the Womb I knew You: A Pastoral Letter on the Human Dignity of the Unborn, Holy Communion, and Catholics in Public Life.”
