Genesis 12: 1-4a; 2 Timothy 1:8b-10; Matthew 17: 1-9. Abram is sent by God to a new land, so that from him, God will create a new nation. In the second reading, Timothy is encouraged to bear his share of the hardship in living and proclaiming the Gospel. In the Gospel, Jesus takes Peter, James and John up a mountain where he is transfigured before them.
Domenica 2A Di Quaresima
From the Pastor's Desk
Dear Parishioners,
A story tells: one day, a man visited a monastery and asked to meet with a monk. He asked the monk to give him spiritual direction. The man began to tell the monk all of his accomplishments: graduated from universitiy, was successful in business, volunteered for all sort of activities and so on. As the man talked, the monk began to fill a teacup with water. The water reached the rim of the cup, and the monk kept pouring until the water spilled onto the table. The man saw it and shouted, “Stop, the cup will hold no more water!” The monk looks at him and said, “Neither can I teach you anything. You are too full of yourself now. Come back when you have some room for God.” As we live in this modern age, there are many things that we do and are involved in. Do we have time to listen to God? Or are we too busy?
We are in the second week of Lent and today’s Gospel tells us about the Transfiguration of the Lord. Up on the mountain top, Peter, James and John were with Christ and they heard the voice from heaven, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." (Mt. 7:1-9) Did Jesus’ disciples listen to him? They listened to Jesus, but they could not comprehend in the human way of understanding. Jesus tells them, as he is going to Jerusalem, that he saw ahead of him a growing opposition from the religious leaders who would kill him. Peter tried to stop Jesus from entering Jerusalem. Jesus scolds him for not understanding his words. Jesus asked his disciples to listen and be witnesses of what he has done.
Lent is an opportunity for us to set aside our busy life to praise and listen to God. We can listen to God through our prayers and we can fast, which can clear our minds to tune in with God. We can listen to our hearts and hear God speaking to us through the scripture readings. Our parish offers Adoration and Stations of the Cross every Friday. I hope you can put aside your busy schedule to attend! We can listen to God by reaching out to help those in need. Unsheltered people often knock the rectory door and ask for help: clothes, blankets, socks, money and any personal items. You can donate these items to the parish. Our school needs scholarship funds to help unfortunate students. I hope you can help.
Let us live our Lenten season by listening to God’s word and being charitable with our neighbors and help those in need.
Have a blessed Lent!
