Sirach 15:15-20; 1 Corinthians 2:6-10; Matthew 5:17-37 or 5:20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a, 37. In the first reading, Sirach tells the people they can choose to follow the commandments, or not. But keeping the commandments will save them. In Saint Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, he writes of the greatness prepared for those who love God. In the Gospel from Matthew, Jesus teaches about the law. He says that he has come to fulfill the law, and that those who keep it will be called the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Domenica 6A Del Tempo Ordinario

Jesuit Alumni in Congress 2023
The 118th Congress got off to a wobbly start in 2023 with historic mayhem snarling the election of the Speaker of the House through 15 ballots. Despite the drama, it reminds a poin of pride for Jesuit colleges and universities that for the fifth consecutive sessions, Jesuit-educated members account for about 10% of Congress. Among the current 534 members (and six non-voting delegates) of the 118th Congress, 54 graduated from Jesuit colleges and universities. There are 14 Jesuit alumni in the Senate and 40 in the House of Representatives; 15 of the nation’s Jesuit colleges and universities are currently represented by alumni in the 118th U.S. Congress.

Lent is Coming! February 22 is Ash Wednesday, and it is not too early to start preparing ourselves for the salutary disciplines of Lent. Every Friday we will have a Soup Supper at 6:00 pm, followed by the Stations of the Cross. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are of course obligatory days of fast and abstinence , and abstinence from meet is obligatory days of abstinence from meat. 1500 years ago Pope Leo the Great noted the value of communal fasting:
“The exercise of self-restraint which an individual Christian practices by his own will is for the advantage of that single member; but a fast undertaken by the Church at large includes everyone in the general purification. God’s people never is so powerful as when the hearts of all the faithful join together in the unity of holy obedience, and when, in the Christian camp, one and the same preparation is made by all, and one and the same bulwark protects all…”
