Jeremiah 17:5–8; Psalm 1; 1 Corinthians 15:12, 16–20; Luke 6:17, 20–26 Jeremiah explains that those who trust in the LORD will bear fruit like a tree planted beside gentle waters. Paul teaches that because Christ was raised from the dead, we can hope in our own resurrection. Jesus preaches that those who suffer now will be rewarded in time. Listening to God’s word today, let us find hope in the promises of the Lord.
Domenica 6A Del Tempo Ordinario
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today the Salesian Congregation begins the General Chapter 29 with a theme, “Passionate about Jesus Christ, dedicated to the young.” About 250 provincials and delegates will gather in Turin for almost two months to meet, discuss, share, and decide the guidelines for the entire congregation to follow over the next six years. Also, the General Chapter members will elect a new rector major.
The beatitudes that Jesus teaches us today are to guide us to build the kingdom of God on earth.
We Salesians, are called to follow Jesus, to live in community and to serve the young, especially the poor youth. In today’s Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches his disciples and the crowd, “Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.” The Salesians and other consecrated people are called to live in vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. To live in poverty reminds us to depend on God and so to commit and dedicate our lives in service of others, especially the poor.
What does Jesus tell us about living the life of poverty? Jesus means being poor in the spiritual sense. Before God, every one of us is poor and, being poor, we are blessed. Following the beatitudes will lead us to true happiness and holiness. We are called to imitate Jesus, who experienced being poor. Jesus does not have a home and not even a pillow on which to rest his head. Being poor like Jesus means to give up things and to focus on doing God’s work. A rich young man asks Jesus, “What should I do to inherit the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus replies, “Go home, sell everything you have, give to the poor, then come and follow me.” The young man cannot do it because he is not ready to give up everything to follow Jesus. Possessing material things can prevent us from doing ministry. When Jesus commands his disciples to go to the villages to proclaim the Gospel, they are told not to bring anything, so that they are free to concentrate on their ministries of healing the sick and serving those in need. We too are called to depend on God, to open ourselves to serve others and to witness to the Gospel in our daily life.
I ask you to pray for the Salesian Congregation as they begin General Chapter 29 and for all Salesians in their ministries to the poor youth throughout the world.
Have a blessed week!

OUR JUBILEE YEAR! Our Centennial Celebration and Jubilee Year has begun! On November 9-10, 2024 we began the 100 Year Anniversary of Saints Peter and Paul Church. What a great weekend! The Masses and the Renewal of Wedding Vows were holy and beautiful; both the Saturday and Sunday receptions were packed; the food was great, and the grace of God touched all! Go here for links to photos and videos.
Remember, though, the Jubilee Celebration is for the whole year—see the indulgence granted to us by the Vatican at left! Let us take this year to gratefully reflect on the gifts given to us by God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; to honor those who have come before us, and to preserve our faith and our Church for our posterity!
JUBILEE PLENARY INDULGENCE On the Occasion of the Jubilee Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Church.
The Apostolic Penitentiary in Rome, charged with the granting of indulgences, has designated Saints Peter and Paul Church in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, California as a Vatican recognized site for Plenary Indulgence and has granted a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful who truly repent and are driven by charity under these certain conditions from November 1, 2024 until November 1, 2025. A Plenary Indulgence may also apply, through the faithful’s own sufferings, to the Souls in Purgatory.
WHAT IS A PLENARY INDULGENCE? An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment for sin the guilt of which is already forgiven, which a properly disposed member of the Christian faithful obtains under certain conditions with the help of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies authoritatively the treasure of the satisfaction of Christ and the saints. Code of canon Law (can. 992). A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in a state of grace, have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. You can download a flyer here on how to obtain this wonderful spiritual gift!
