Isaiah 8:23-9:3; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17; Matthew 4:12-23 or 4:12-17. The first reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah proclaims a message of hope and joy, saying that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Saint Paul in the second reading urges the Corinthians to put aside rivalries, and instead be united in their faith in Christ. Today’s Gospel relates how Jesus calls Peter and Andrew to put down their nets and come and follow him.
Domenica 3A Del Tempo Ordinario
From the Pastor’s Desk
I used to help celebrate Sunday Masses at the Church of Visitation in San Francisco. This parish has a mission Guadalupe Chapel in Brisbane and Fr. Thuan Hoang is the only pastor. He needs help at every Sunday Masses. One of the Masses at 9:30am is celebrated at both locations.
Dioceses and religious orders urgently need more vocations. As Salesians, we do not have enough vocations as sisters, priests and brothers to minister in our schools, youth centers, retreat centers and parishes. Dioceses and religious orders often organize “Come and See” events to invite young people to discern priestly and religious vocations, but very few young people respond. In fact, some young people enter the formation program to discern their vocations, but when the time comes to make a serious commitment, they back out. Others commit to further study and even take vows, but leave the formation program for various reasons.
Why the lack of vocations today? There are many factors to the vocation crisis. Families have only one or two children and parents do not want them to be priests or religious; sexual scandal in the church discourages young people from considering vocations; and young people are more attracted to a comfortable life than to live the priestly and religious life. We are facing a vocation crisis in our times, but Jesus did not have any trouble to recruit followers in his time.
In today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us that Jesus walks along the Sea Shore of Galilee. He calls Simon, his brother Andrew, then he calls James and John. All these men are fishermen who have permanent careers, but they instantly give up everything, even their families, to follow Jesus. Maybe they want to change their careers or they have seen what Jesus has done, healing the sick and forgiving sins. Jesus clearly tells them that he wants them to become the fishers of men. Perhaps they do not know what that means, but they are instantly willing to commit themselves to following Jesus. What can we do to attract young people to consider priestly and religious vocations? Maybe young people can answer this question.
Fr. Vien Nguyen is the Salesian vocation director. He organizes “Come and See” retreats, visits high schools, colleges and university campuses to invite young people to consider discerning their vocations. He feels that young people are attract to other professional careers, but are hesitant to make commitment and to take responsibility as a priest or religious. Possibly, because we live in a first world country, materialism attracts young people more than seeing the greater need of helping others spiritually.
The lack of vocations and the readings today remind all of us as parents, teachers and adults to pray and encourage young people to consider priestly and religious vocations. We pray for vocations every day and it is time for us to take action by directly inviting and encouraging young people to think about vocations.
Have a blessed week!
