Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20. At God’s command, Jonah goes to Nineveh, prophesying destruction. The citizens of Nineveh repent and are spared. Saint Paul urges the Corinthians to act in a way that reflects the passing away of the world. In the Gospel, Jesus arrives in Galilee, proclaiming the time of fulfillment has arrived, and that all are to repent, and believe in the Gospel. The Apostles Simon, Andrew, James, and John leave their lives as fishermen to follow him. (Painting by Jesus Marin).

St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622)
Bishop. Doctor, Founder. Canonized 1665
Born in Geneva, Francis de Sales, was noted for his deep faith and his gentle approach to the religious divisions in his land resulting from the Protestant Reformation. He is known also for his classic writings on the topic of spiritual direction and formation, particularly the Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God.
Francis came from a noble family: His father was François de Sales, Lord of Boisy, Sales, and Novel. He had the best possible education: at the age of eight, he attended the Capuchin college in Annency, and in 1583, he went to the Collège de Clermont in Paris, then a Jesuit institution, to study rhetoric and humanities.
In 1584, Francis experienced a spiritual crisis, which lasted for two years. According to Wikipedia “in January 1587, with great difficulty, he visited the old parish of Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Paris, where he prayed the ‘Memorare’ before a famed statue of Our Lady of Good Deliverance, a Black Madonna. He consecrated himself to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and decided to dedicate his life to God with a vow of chastity. He then became a tertiary of the Minim Order.” Francis received a doctorate in law and theology in 1592 and was Ordained in 1593. He was then appointed provost of the cathedral chapter (a college of clerics who advise a bishop) in Geneva. As provost, Francis engaged in one of the two things he is best remembered for: patient kind-hearted conversion. Despite assassination attempts, Francis converted an estimated 40,000 people back into the Catholic Church.
In 1602 Francis was made Bishop of Geneva. Wikipedia writes “During his years as bishop, Sales acquired a reputation as a spellbinding preacher and something of an ascetic. His motto was, ‘He who preaches with love, preaches effectively.’ His goodness, patience and mildness became proverbial…”
Those qualities have earned him legions of admirers over the centuries, one of whom was St. John Bosco, who named his order the ‘SALESians.’
St. Francis de Sales has been styled “the Gentleman Saint” because of his patience and gentleness. He is the patron of writers and journalists, and, because he developed a sign language to spread the word of God to the deaf, he is the patron of the deaf as well. His Feastday is January 24. From his writings:
“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them - every day begin the task anew.”

"My life experience has been that only the practice of religion can assure concord in families and the happiness of those who live in this valley of tears."
"Be brave and try to detach your heart from worldly things. Do your utmost to banish darkness from your mind and come to understand what true, selfless piety is. Through confession, endeavor to purify your heart of anything which may still taint it. Enliven your faith, which is essential to understand and achieve piety."
"All past persecutors of the Church are now no more, but the Church still lives on. The same fate awaits modern persecutors; they, too, will pass on, but the Church of Jesus Christ will always remain, for God has pledged His Word to protect Her and be with Her forever, until the end of time."
