Exodus 20: 1-17 or 20:1-3, 7-8, 12-17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-25; John 2:13-25. God gives the Israelites his commandments, saying he will punish those who do not follow them but grant mercy to those who do. Saint Paul writes the Corinthians, we proclaim Christ crucified, which is foolishness to those who do not believe, but power and wisdom to those who do. Inn the Gospel, Jesus drives the money-changers and vendors from the temple area, and tells the crowd that if the temple is destroyed he will raise it in three days.
Domenica 3A Di Quaresima
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This year we have seven candidates who have joined the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). They are: Sieun Lee, Victoria Low, Richard Stephens, Eugeniu Spivacenco, Grace Goce, Meredith Duncan, and Daniel Francis. These candidates are in the process of preparing for the Easter Sacraments. On Sunday, February 18, they attended the Rite of Election at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Cathedral was packed with RCIA candidates and sponsors from parishes throughout the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Archbishop was very happy to see the large number of people who filled the entire Cathedral.
At our parish this Saturday, on the Vigil of the Third Sunday of Lent and the next two Saturdays, Vigils of the Fourth and Fifth Sunday of Lent, the RCIA candidates will participate in the rite of the Scrutinies. What are the Scrutinies? They are the rites for those candidates who are preparing to be baptized at the Easter Vigil Mass. These candidates are called “The Elect.” They participate in the Liturgy of the Word, listening to the Scripture readings of Year A. Then, after the rite, they will continue to reflect on the Scripture passages. Today’s reading tells us about the water of life that only Jesus can give, so that we will never thirst again. Jesus meets the woman of Samaria at Jacob’s well and tells her, “Everyone who drinks this water [physical water] will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4: 13-14). This reminds us of the water that we received at baptism. Through the water, we are called to imitate Jesus Christ, to be priest, prophet and king. Priest: we are to pray to God and pray for one another; Prophet: we are to proclaim, live and evangelize God’s message and to bring justice, and peace to all the nations; and King: – we are to serve one another and to build the kingdom of God on this earth.
Let us together to pray for these candidates as they prepare to be baptized at Easter. Let us also pray that we ourselves live our baptismal call and especially to live our Lent in a meaningful way: that is to repent and believe in the Gospel.
Have a blessed Lent!
