Wisdom 18:6-9; Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19 or 11:1-2, 8-12; Luke 12:32-48 or 12: 35-40. The reading from the Book of Wisdom recounts the faith of the forefathers on the night of Passover. The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us of Abraham’s unwavering faith in things unseen. In the Gospel, Jesus uses a parable to teach the importance of right priorities—those who remain faithful and ready will be rewarded.
Domenica 19A Del Tempo Ordinario
SAINT WHO?
Teresa of Calcutta
Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu was born to a devout Albanian family in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1940. She joined the Sisters of Loreto at 18, received the name Mary Teresa, and was sent to Calcutta, India, where for almost 20 years she taught at a girls school.
In 1946, while travelling on the train to Darjeeling, Teresa heard Christ calling her “to quench his thirst for love and for souls.” “I am sending you into the dark holes of the poor,” he told her. “Come, be my light.”
Over the next two years, Jesus revealed to Teresa the outlines for a new order, and on December 21, 1948, she went for the first time to the slums of Calcutta to place herself at the service of the poor. Some of her former students soon joined her. The order expanded rapidly, growing to include branches for priests, brothers, and lay co-workers. Today the Missionaries of Charity serve in over 130 countries.
After Teresa’s death, her private letters revealed her spiritual experience of desolation, a painful purification of faith that went on for over forty years. By this inner trial she shared in both Christ’s abandonment on the cross and the feeling of being unwanted that is the plight of the poorest among us.
“We must know that we have been created for greater things,” Teresa taught. “We have been created in order to love and be loved.”
Loving Father, through the intercession of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, help me know your love. Help me to offer that love to others. -Fr. Al Mengon, SDB, taken from the Magnificat
