Malachi 1:14b-2:2b, 8-10; 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13; Matthew 23:1-12. In the first reading, God sternly warns the priests that their behavior is leading his people astray, and that they must change their ways or risk his wrath. The second reading finds St. Paul giving thanks that the people to whom he preached have taken the word of God to heart and put it into practice. In the Gospel, Jesus warns the people not to follow their earthly leaders down the path to destruction, but instead to lead lives of humble service to one another.

Saint WHO?
Sharbel Makhlūf + 1898
Yussef Antoun Makhlūf was the youngest of five siblings in Lebanon. He developed a love of solitude. Without telling anyone, he left home in his twenties to become a monk. Entering the Maronite monastery of St. Maron, he received the name Sharbel. Even his own family was not allowed to be present at his solemn vows, in a ceremony reflecting the austerity of life he was embracing. After nineteen years in community, he became a hermit.
His reputation for holiness grew, making him known as a wonderworker among Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims. In 1898, after twenty-three years in seclusion, Father Sharbel died on Christmas Eve.
Despite his apparent distance from the world, he wrote passionately about the importance of family life: “Preserve the warmth of the family, because the warmth of the whole world cannot make up for it.” And since his death, this retiring saint, never photographed in his lifetime, seems to have acquired a love for engaging in “photo bombing.” In 1950, a group of pilgrims took a photo at a monastery. When it was developed, they discovered a figure they did not recognize. Older monks at the community confirmed it was, in fact, Father Sharbel, and it is the foundation of current artistic representations of the saint. Other photographic appearances have also been reported among those for whom he has worked miracles.
Heavenly Father. may your servant Sharbel obtain for each of us a holy sense of humor.

Thank you! We thank and are proud of all parishioners who assisted during the nasty incident at last week’s Sunday 5:00PM Mass. When the criminal punched our visiting brother from the Philippines, you came to his aid and quickly called 911. Courageous parishioners followed the criminal up Filbert Street, and were able to identify him to the SFPD. As we all now know, the man had bombs and threw them while the police were chasing him. Imagine what harm he could have done with those bombs had our parishioners not been able to identify him to the police! We pray for our brother who was injured by the assault, and, hard as it may be, we pray for the criminal, that he may experience conversion. We also pray that our elected officials do more to fulfill their responsibility to protect their constituents.
