Wisdom 6:12-16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 or 4:3-14; Matthew 25:1-13. The first reading says that Wisdom is resplendent and unfading, and can be found by those who seek her. In his Letter to the Thessalonians, Paul writes that Jesus’ resurrection enables them to have hope that those Christians who have preceded them in death will also rise in Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins. Five of them were foolish and five were wise.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are in the month of November and the Church invites us to remember all of our loved ones who have gone before us. It is a great tradition that we offer our prayers for the deceased. It reminds us that we are in communion between the living and the dead. Our responsibilities are to offer Masses and prayers for them because some day we will need others to pray for us.
This church is a ministry of the Franciscan Capuchins. A tour brother told us the history of this place. I learned about Cardinal Antonio Barberini, who was the brother of Pope Urban VIII. He had the remains of thousands of Capuchins excavated at the Via dei Lucchesi Monastery. Then they had all the Franciscan priests and brothers’ bones placed in the crypt of San Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. They placed all the bones along the walls of the crypt decorated like works of art. There are some whole skeletons dressed with the Franciscan habits which are standing among other bones. I learned that the entire crypt houses the remains of about 3,600 brothers buried between 1500 and 1870.
As I entered the crypt, there was a large sign at the entrance that said, “What you are now, we used to be; what we are now you will be.” This quote reminds me of today’s Gospel of Matthew. Jesus tells his disciples a parable to urge them and us to prepare for the day that we will be. How can we prepare for the second coming of Jesus Christ? We can prepare by living the Gospel, practicing our faith, and reaching out to help others. Especially in this coming holiday season we can help those less fortunate than we. It will help us at the time of judgment to answer God with all the things that we have prepared in our lives. Hopefully, those of us who are ready, Jesus will tell us come and enjoy the heavenly banquet.
Have a blessed week!
