Joshua 5:9a, 10–12; Psalm 34; 2 Corinthians 5:17–21; Luke 15:1–3, 11–32. “(He) was dead and has come to life again,” says the father in today’s Gospel in Jesus’ story of love and forgiveness, using words that anticipate similar ones that we will hear from the voices of angels and on the lips of his disciples in just a few weeks. Listening to this parable today, as well as the words from Joshua and Paul, let us reflect on how God transforms us all, from the believers reaching the Promised Land, to sinners who turned away from those who loved them, to all of us today.
Domenica 4A Di Quaresima
Saint Who? An Israelite child saved from the waters of the Nile and raised by Pharoah’s daughter, Moses grew to manhood among the Egyptians, who were enslaving his people. After he had killed one of the for beating a fellow Israelite, he fled to the land of Midian, where he herded sheep for 40 years. There in the wilderness he encountered God in the burning bush and heard his command to lead the Israelite people to freedom. A dialogue ensued between Moses and God, culminating in God’s mysterious revelation of his name: I am who I am. With the help of his brother Aaron, Moses went to Pharoah to plead for the Israelites’ release from bondage. Only after ten plagues were visited upon Egypt did Pharoah relent and permit the entire people to leave. Moses led them through the Red Sea and into the desert, where he received the Ten Commandments on the Holy Mountain of Sinai. “The encounter of God and Moses on this mountain,” Saint John Paul II taught, “enshrines at the heart of our religion the mystery of liberating obedience.” Moses died after leading and interceding for the Hebrew people for about four decades. According to Gregory of Nyssa, who wrote an entire commentary on Moses’ life as an exemplar of the spiritual journey toward God, Moses’ outstanding virtue was his meekness. Father of mercies, through the intercession of Saint Moses, make me obedient to your law, Docile before your commands. -Fr. Al Mengon, SDB Parochial Vicar (taken from The Magnificat
