1 Kings 19:16b, 19–21: Psalm 16 “You are my inheritance, O Lord.” Galatians 5:1, 13–18: Luke 9:51–62. Following the Lord takes a total commitment. Elisha, tilling the field, sacrifices his oxen and plow when the LORD calls him to succeed Elijah. Saint Paul, who dramatically committed to preaching in the Lord’s name, calls us to serve each other according to the greatest commandment. In the Gospel, Jesus repeatedly invokes the kingdom of God when encountering would-be disciples, demanding they follow him wholeheartedly, without reservation, without looking back. As we listen to God’s word, let us reflect upon our own response to Jesus’ call.
From the Pastor’s Desk Guest Column
Saint Luke’s account of the life and teaching of Jesus is set within the context of a journey – Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. Going to Jerusalem is the reason for Jesus’ existence. It is the place of his passion, death, resurrection and ascension. It is also the place from where the Spirit initiates and guides the church.
When Samaritans do not allow Jesus to go through their territory because he was going to Jerusalem (Samaritans looked at Jerusalem and its sympathizers as enemies) James and John ask if they should call on God to rain fire from heaven to consume the Samaritans. Little did they know that Jerusalem was going to be where Jesus would be crucified. Later on, in the gospel, we will realize that James and John believed Jesus was going to Jerusalem to be throned as king. They ask whether each of them could be designated to sit on thrones on his right and left.
Luke proposes that those who seek to be Jesus’ disciples, now that he was going to Jerusalem, where thinking like James and John. Jesus, therefore clarifies he has no intention of usurping or establishing an earthly kingdom: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head and rest.”
Still, some insist on following him but one asks to first bury his deceased father, another asks to first allow him to bid his family goodbye. Burying the dead – especially deceased members of one’s family – is an esteemed act of charity among the Jewish people. Love for family is an established commandment of God. When Jesus declares following him is a priority greater than family ties and obligations – established by God – he is ranking himself as someone who is at least equal to God, if not God himself.
Many concerns, in our present day, fight for priority status in our lives: the mortgage, our careers, comfortable living, our goals and dreams. Some of these have legitimate claims to be considered priority. At the same time, many present-day circumstances call out for our attention and beg that we shift our priorities: the war in Ukraine, the homeless situation in the Tenderloin, inflation, the supply chain crisis, the services’ labor crisis.
If we are to truly follow Jesus, the Word of God today reminds us that we are called to follow him to Jerusalem – to a place of self-giving and concern for the greater good rather than for our own good and satisfaction. During the days of Lent and Holy Week we often heard “There is no resurrection without the crucifixion first.” Saint Luke doesn’t tell us whether those who indicated a desire to follow Jesus did so. Why? Because it is up to us to complete that story. –Fr. Ramon Zarate, SDB Parochial Vicar Mass Intentions For The Week
