1 Kings 3:5, 7-12; Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52 or 13:44-46. God tells Solomon to ask for anything, and he asks for an understanding heart to lead his people.. Saint Paul writes to the Romans that, all things work for good to those who love God. In the Gospel, Jesus uses three parables (buried treasure, pearl of great price, and a full fish net) to explain the kingdom of heaven.
Domenica 17A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saint WHO?
Ignatius of Loyola
The life of Ignatius, a journey from soldier to saint, is well known. Recovering from a cannon wound, confined to bed, and bored, he rather reluctantly began to read a life of Christ and lives of the saints. Then he started noticing his reaction when he imagined himself imitating the saints or more secular heroes. In the former case, peace would remain, a consolation. But the latter produced only fleeting pleasure. This observation formed the foundation for Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and the discernment of spirits.
The exercises provide principles for combat, a valuable key for interpreting the movements of the soul. In prayer, many struggle to know whether they are hearing GOD’s voice. Ignatius’ rules, with definitions of consolation and desolation, help guard against the enemy’s tactics. They also, and more importantly, provide insights into how God communicates and how to respond to him.
Of particular benefit in combination with a daily examen, the Ignatian exercises habituate a soul to recognize the tender presence of the Father in every moment, from the pressures of daily work to times of arid prayer to spiritual ecstasy. So adept did Saint Ignatius become, it is said, he would frequently begin to weep, overwhelmed by the goodness of GOD. He died in Rome at the age of sixty-five.
Loving Father, through the prayers of St. Ignatius teach us to recognize your voice
and respond in grateful obedience.
