2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:15. In today’s first treading, Elisha the prophet directs his protesting servant to give his barley loaves to the people to eat. The Lord multiplies this offering and feeds a hundred people, with some left over. Paul urges the Ephesians to live in humility, working to preserve unity. In the Gospel, Jesus feeds five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish.

In 2005, I attended World Youth Day (WYD) in Cologne, Germany. About a million young people came from all over the world to this gathering. An evening before the WYD ended, all young people hiked about 10 kilometers and gathered in the Marian Field to attend the vigil with Pope Benedict XVI. The WYD organizers had to provide dinner and breakfast for the million young people. They set up food stations throughout the field and the leaders of each group would come to get food for their groups. We ate our dinner that evening and breakfast the next morning. At noon time, after the closing mass with the Pope, people started leaving the field. I saw a lot of food left on the field where people camped overnight. A lot of the food was packed in tin cans and nonperishable. In our modern times it is probably easier to provide food for that many people. But during the Biblical time, it was impossible to do so.
As we heard from today’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples were probably overwhelmed to see so many people who are hungry and waiting to be fed. Philip tells Jesus, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” Other disciples tell Jesus, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” John 6: 7-9. They panicked because of the number of people. Jesus knows exactly what he is going to do. He multiplies the loaves and fishes, and has his disciples distribute. Everyone fills his or her stomach and the disciples collect twelve wicker baskets of the leftovers. Jesus not only fills people with spiritual food through his teaching and healing, He also fills their physical hunger. God can fulfill us abundantly according to our needs.
Today, whenever we gather for the Eucharist and at Holy Communion, we believe that Jesus keeps giving himself to us as food and drink. When we receive Jesus, we are called to imitate him by living our Christian way of life: to love and care for one another. We thank you, Jesus, for this great gift.
Have a blessed week!
