1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:22-33. Elijah heard God in a tiny whispering sound. Paul writes to the Romans that he has great sorrow and constant anguish in [his] heart for his own people. In the Gospel, Peter becomes frightened while walking on the water toward Jesus. Jesus catches him from sinking.
Domenico 19A Del Tempo Ordinario
Saint WHO?
Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio)
By the time Francesco Forgione, later known as Padre Pio, was six years old, he had begun to have mystical experiences and desired to give his life to God. His father traveled to America to earn money for his studies, and despite poor health—doctors thought he would die of tuberculosis when he was a young man—Francesco entered the Capuchins and was ordained.
Blessed with regular visits from Mary, Jesus, and his guardian angel, Padre Pio’s life is a litany of miraculous events. He received the stigmata and prophetic insights, as well as the gift of bilocation. One story tells how he appeared in the sky during World War II, deflecting the bomber squadron en route to destroy his town.
Another story comes from Pio’s superior, who in 1954 gathered some people who had known the priest for a long time in order to learn about his early years. Pio himself was always somehow present at the meetings (while apparently remaining in the monastery). One day the conversation turned sour as people “were speaking badly about some people.” A woman known to have seen the saint bilocating cried out “Padre Pio has an angry face.” Not until the startled group changed course did he calm down. “We were happy again, and had learnt our lesson to not speak badly of people.”
Merciful Father, through the intercession of Padre Pio
make us charitable in our speech about others.
