Isaiah 22:19-23; Romans 11:33-36; Matthew 16:13-20. The Lord tells Shebna, the scribe, I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station and replace you with the honorable Eliakim. In the second reading, Paul writes to the Romans about the inscrutable judgements and unsearchable ways of God: For from him and through him and for him are all things. In the Gospel, Peter answers Jesus’ question, saying, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus blesses Peter and proclaims him as the rock upon whom he will build his Church.

Saint WHO?
St. Augustine of Hippo +430
Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Feastday August 28
“For now treat the Scripture of God as the face of God,” Augustine preached, “Melt in its presence.” At the age of 31, Augustine gave up a promising academic career and a life of pleasure, after hearing the words, Tolle, lege: “Take and read.”
He took up the Scriptures, opened at random to Romans 13:13-14, and never looked back. Though he confesses to having dismissed the Scriptures in his earlier life, they now became for him not just a book, but :the face of God.” Scripture became his language and formed the structure for his thinking.
As Bishop of Hippo, Augustine began his treatise De Doctrina Christiana (“Om Christian Teaching”). “The end of all Scripture is love,” love for God. The work provides rules for the interpretation of the Scripture, and counsels Christians to learn well so that they may understand the imagery. In it Augustine also teaches that the best commentary on a passage of Scripture is other parts of Scripture.
In dealing with difficult passages, Augustine says, one should be aware of metaphors and apply them when a too-literal interpretation runs against purity of life, sound doctrine, or the reign of charity. At the heart of his teaching is the recognition that Christ makes sense of the Bible. “The Scripture was closed, nobody understood it; the Lord was crucified, and the Scripture was melted like wax, that all the weak ones should understand it.”
God our Father, you made your will known to St. Augustine through the Bible.
Help us to pray with the Scriptures and be transformed by them,
so that your word may be our life.
