Isaiah 50:4c-9a; James 2:14-18; Mark 8:27-35. In the first reading, Isaiah declares his trust in God to uphold him. In the second reading, James explains the necessity of works to accompany and demonstrate faith. In the Gospel, Peter confesses his faith in Jesus as the Christ. Jesus predicts his passion, then explains to Peter and the disciples that they must follow him.

To study for the priesthood, each of us has to take the course on Christology. We learn about Jesus of Nazareth. It is the part of theology that reflects on the doctrine and the teaching of Jesus, who has two natures: divine nature and human nature. Theology students are taught the life of Jesus from the incarnation, birth, suffering and resurrection. In our time we know who Jesus is. But during Biblical time, Jesus’ disciples did not know for sure who Jesus of Nazareth was.
In today’s Gospel of Mark, Jesus asks his disciples what people say about who Jesus is? Jesus poses two questions to his disciples: “Who do people say I am?” and, “Who do you say I am?” They answer, “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” No one knows for sure who Jesus is. Peter surprised his peers when he declared, “You are the Christ.” Peter gave the perfect answer. Perhaps Peter was thinking that Jesus would be like King David who would rule the world from the land of Palestine. Jesus reveals the mystery to his disciples and orders them not yet to tell anyone about his identity. Jesus tells his disciples that he will go to Jerusalem to suffer and to be crucified. His disciples only see Jesus’ foretelling with the eyes of the world. They think that Jesus should be glorified once he enters Jerusalem. They think they, too, will be glorified, and sit in places of honor.
Jesus goes to Jerusalem, not to fight against his enemies, but to sacrifice his own life for all of our sins. The disciples are disappointed when Jesus tells them that he will suffer and be crucified. When Jesus called them, they left everything to follow him. Their hopes are to someday be very important people in Jerusalem. Jesus’ response to Peter is harsh, “Get behind me, Satan!” Jesus did not mean to send Peter and his disciples away, but Jesus tell them to stay behind Jesus. Because while they are in the front with Jesus, they fail to understand and lose track of Jesus’ plan, why God the Father has sent Jesus to this world. Staying behind Jesus means he will lead them in the right path. Jesus’ disciples, and we, are warned that the price we have to pay for following Jesus is to carry the cross and even to sacrifice our lives in the name of Jesus.
Let us pray for ourselves not to think and act in a worldly way, but in God’s way. St. James’ letter reminds us that “Faith without works is dead.” We are called to live our faith by witnessing to the Gospel and imitating Christ by reaching out to help those who are less fortune than ourselves. Have a blessed week! Fr. Tho Pastor Mass Intentions For The Week
