Exodus 32:7–11, 13–14;. Psalm 51 “I will rise and go to my father.” 1 Timothy 1:12–17;. Luke 15:1–32 or 15:1–10 Again and again today we hear examples of those who turn away from the Lord, who wander away or become lost: the Chosen People in the desert, Saul of Tarsus himself, a wayward sheep, a lost coin, the prodigal son. We see them all lost. But none are ever truly lost because God will always search for them, rescue them, and welcome them back into the fold. With repentant hearts, let us recall those times when we were lost and felt the embrace of God’s mercy .
At a Lenten penance service in St. Peter’s Basilica on March 13, 2016, Pope Francis announced an extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy from Dec. 8, 2015 to Nov. 20, 2016. The pope emphasized the theme, “No one can be excluded from God's mercy.” Father Marko Rupnik, Jesuit, who created the Logo for the Year of Mercy with the image of Jesus carries a man on his shoulder and the motto: “Merciful Like the Father.” Today’s Gospel Jesus tells us three parables: the lost sheep, the woman lost who lost a coin and the prodigal son to illustrate God of mercy like the Father.
The parable of the lost sheep: Why did the shepherd leave 99 sheep to look for the one lost sheep? During Biblical times, the shepherd was hired to tend the sheep. If he lost one sheep, he could lose his job. Jesus uses this parable to tell us that our merciful God is always looking for a sinner and hopes that he or she returns to God.
The parable of the woman who lost a coin. If the woman has ten coins and lost one, is it worthwhile to look for the only lost one? Probably not. But the lost coin might be valuable to her so that she must look for it. Once she found it, she was rejoicing and sharing her joy with friends. If she throws a party, it probably costs her more than the lost coin. But this parable tells us that once a sinner returns to God, the faithful community and heaven will rejoice.
The parable of the prodigal son describes to us the three characters: the father, the older son and the youngest son. The two sons take advantage of the father’s generosity. The youngest son took all the money that he would inherit from his father and spent it all. The older son, lives with the father, but he distances himself from his father. He blames and is upset with his father because of the way he treats him and his younger brother. The father lost both of the sons, especially the youngest one. But he is always vigilant in waiting for him to return. Once he returns, the father rejoices and forgives him totally—he throws a party to celebrate. But conversion has to initiate from a person’s heart. Our God is like the father in the parable who is always vigilant in waiting for us sinners to return to Him. How many times do we sin against God? And how many times does God forgive us through the sacrament of reconciliation? God of mercy and love always forgives us. Someone asks, when I sinned, I only need to say I’m sorry to God. Why do I need to confess? The answer is that the sacrament of reconciliation is an act where we directly ask God for forgiveness. If the youngest son had never returned and faced the father, he could never receive forgiveness from his father.
Our God is mercy and love like the father who always welcomes and waits for us to return. Let us always rely and trust on our merciful God.
Have a blessed week!

STOP LEGAL INFANTICIDE! VOTE “NO” ON PROPOSITION 1: Proposition 1 is a worst-case scenario for abortion in California. It is an expensive and misleading ballot measure that allows unlimited late-term abortions — for any reason, at any time, even moments before birth, paid for by tax dollars. Prop 1 isn’t needed. Sadly, California already has some of the most permissive abortion laws in the nation that would remain in effect without the amendment, including our current limit on late-term abortions that are permitted only for the life and health of the mother. Prop 1 destroys this common-sense limit. California does not limit state spending on abortion, and with thousands more traveling from other states, the cost will be in the hundreds of millions. Don’t hand lawmakers a blank check to pay for abortions, and don’t let them make California an “abortion sanctuary.” To learn more, visit www.CAcatholic.org/Prop1
