Acts 9:26-31; 1 John 3:18-24; John 15:1-8. Barnabas helps Saul enter into the community of the disciples by reporting on Saul’s vision of the Lord and his bold proclamation in Jesus’ name. The First Letter of John instructs the community on love of neighbor, and on keeping the commandments as proof of belief in Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus says, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. Those who remain in him will bear fruit and their needs will be met.
Domenica 5A Di Pasqua
From the Pastor’s Desk
We continue with the final installment of Pope Francis message to the world on Easter Sunday:
May the Risen One make the light of his face shine upon migrants and on all those who are passing through a period of economic difficulty, and offer them consolation and hope in their moment of need. May Christ guide all persons of good will to unite themselves in solidarity, in order to address together the many challenges which loom over the poorest families in their search for a better life and happiness.
On this day when we celebrate the life given us in the resurrection of the Son, let us remember the infinite love of God for each of us: a love that overcomes every limit and every weakness. And yet how much the precious gift of life is despised! How many children cannot even be born? How many die of hunger and are deprived of essential care or are victims of abuse and violence? How many lives are made objects of trafficking for the increasing commerce in human beings?
Brothers and sisters, on the day when Christ has set us free from the slavery of death, I appeal to all who have political responsibilities to spare no efforts in combatting the scourge of human trafficking, by working tirelessly to dismantle the networks of exploitation and to bring freedom to those who are their victims. May the Lord comfort their families, above all those who anxiously await news of their loved ones, and ensure them comfort and hope.
May the light of the resurrection illumine our minds and convert our hearts, and make us aware of the value of every human life, which must be welcomed, protected and loved.”
Have a Blessed Easter Season!

Santa Gemma: We will celebrate the Festa Di Santa Gemma, beloved of the Lucchese and Italians all over the world, today at the noon Mass. Mass will be followed by a luncheon of the Associazione Lucchesi Nel Mondo at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club. Santa Gemma, pray for us!
Last Sunday’s Incident: We thank our brave men who protected the parish and congregation during last Sunday’s Confirmation Mass. As was widely reported, a disruptive man entered the Church during the Mass, but a group of parishioners and school dads told him he had to leave. They escorted him out, but on the sidewalk a scuffle started and he stabbed one of the dads in the leg. Thankfully the dad is OK. Our men took him into custody, and all the good SFPD had to do was handcuff the criminal and put him in the police car. While this is sad and extremely disturbing, the good news is that the criminal is behind bars, charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and is being held without bail. Very likely, by getting him off the streets, our parishioners and dads prevented something even worse from happening.
But this is just the latest in an unending series of incidents caused by our City government’s tolerance of crime and mentally ill people on the streets. It’s not specific to Saints Peter and Paul. We saw in the news just this past week that the nurses at SF General and the librarians at our public libraries are demanding more protection from exactly the kind of incidents we had on Sunday. Like SF General and the public libraries, we are open every single day. The mission of Jesus Christ requires it! While both our school and club can, and do, fulfill their missions while having gates and doors locked, the Church cannot.
Those familiar with the history of St. John Bosco will remember that there were a number of attempts made on his life from fanatics at both ends of the political spectrum. Someone once asked him “Shouldn’t you forgive them?” Don Bosco replied: “As a Christian I forgive them, but as a citizen I demand that the state fulfill its responsibility to protect me.” Like many saints, Don Bosco had his feet on the ground even while his heart was in heaven!
We, too, need the government to fulfill its first mission, which is the protection of citizens. Contact our Mayor, DA, and Supervisor and demand consequences for criminals!
Finally, various media also reported that this was the second stabbing at Saints Peter and Paul in a month. That is incorrect. Last month a man was stabbed, not seriously, thank heaven, in the park. He was picked up by the ambulance across the street from the Church. –Gibbons J. Cooney, Parish Secretary
