Genesis 2:7-9, 3:17; Romans 5:12-19 or 5:12, 17-19; Matthew 4:1-11. In the first reading, the woman and her husband eat fruit from the tree of life, and realize they are naked. In the Letter to the Romans, Paul reassures us that God’s grace surpasses any of our sins. In the Gospel, the devil tempts Jesus while he is in the desert, but Jesus says to him, Get away, Satan! And the devil leaves him.

Lent 2023
Welcome to Lent 2023, a very special season in our Catholic-Christian tradition.
The Lenten journey begins with the sign of ashes very visible on our foreheads, then we travel with Jesus for forty days. During this time we learn so much from him as we move together from place to place and meet a variety of peoples. We accompany Jesus out in the desert and on a mountain top, we watch him rest by a water well chatting with a real woman, we see him in front of the Temple defending the rights of a blind man, at Bethany he relaxes with his preferred family, the family of his friend Lazarus; we admire him in the streets of Jerusalem as he is being given a hero’s welcome. The journey ends in Jerusalem, in a garden, very early in the morning, on Easter Sunday with his resurrection witnessed by a lonely tearful woman, Mary Magdalene.
Happy Lent.
