Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9; 2 Corinthians 13:11-13; John 3:16-18. On Mount Sinai, Moses encounters the God of Israel as a God of compassion and kindness. Saint Paul urges the Corinthians to live in fellowship and peace as brothers and sisters, children of the one God. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches that his mission is grounded in the total love of the Father for all of creation.

The Church following the earthquake and fire of 1906. At that time,
we were located at the corner of Filbert and Dupont—now Grant Ave.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This is continuing the story of Saints Peter and Paul.
April 18, 1906 – less than ten years after the arrival of the Salesians- marked the day when “the earth shook, and the sky burned.” The “Great Earthquake on San Francisco” devastated the city and left it in ashes. Also engulfed by flames and totally destroyed was the little church on the corner of Filbert and Dupont.
The next six months was a hectic period as San Franciscans struggled to cope with their losses. In North Beach victims of the earthquake and fire pitched tents in what is today Washington Square. For the worshipers of Saints Peter and Paul’s, services were conducted in a temporary shelter. But by November, a small wooden structure had replaced the old. It soon proved too small, and a new site where the twin-spired church is now located, was acquired. Excavations for what is today one of the city’s landmarks began in 1912. But World War I and the crippling “Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1919” that followed, brought construction to halt. For the next seven years, the crypt of the church, often called the “basement church,” served a multi-purpose function. It housed the temporary church, parish hall, gymnasium, and the parish movie theater in turn. Construction began anew in 1922, and the reborn Saints Peter and Paul was dedicated on March 30, 1924. (To be continued)
Have a blessed week!
