Acts 4:32-35; 1 John 5:1-6; John 20: 19-31. Saint Luke (the author of the Acts) describes the life of the early community of believers as being of one heart and mind, whose witness to the resurrection of Jesus brought favor upon them. In the second reading, John assures his community that faith in Jesus and obedience enable believers to conquer the world. In the Gospel, the risen Jesus appears at two different times to his disciples, offering them peace and giving them the authority to forgive sins. Thomas, after seeing Jesus, acknowledges Christ’s divinity, saying My Lord and my God!
Domenica 2A Di Pasqua
O Della Divina Misericordia

Saint WHO?
Saints Who Were Widowed
Saint Helen (+ c. 328) Feast: August 18
There are some who suffer the pains of widowhood while their spouses remain alive. Saint Helen was the daughter of innkeepers in northern Turkey. While working at her parents’ inn, she met the soldier Constantine Chlorus. Married in 270, they had a son, Constantine. Two years later.
Constantius rose higher and higher in the ranks of the military, earning the confidence of co-emperors Maximian and Diocletian. He was appointed overseer of Gaul, Spain, and Britain. But this new position came with two painful changes for Helen. Her son Constantine was sent to join the army in Egypt, and Constantius divorced her to contract a politically advantageous marriage with Maximian’s stepdaughter Flavia Maximiana Theodora.
After 22 years of marriage, Helen was left without husband or son. Little is known of how she managed, except that duging this lonely period she converted to Christianity. When her husband died in 306, she was reunited with Constantine, who was soon proclaimed emperor. He heaped honors on his mother, including renaming her hometown Helenopolis, and supported her Christian work. Helen, who is the patron of archeologists, became the driving force behind the rediscovery of the holy places and artifacts of Christ’s life, including the True Cross. According to tradition, the icon of Our Lado of Częstochowa, beloved in Poland and around the world, was also discovbered by Helen.
Compassionate Father, througfh the prayers of Saint Helen,
strengthen all who have been separated from
spouse and children through infidelity or divorce.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday: “How much the world is in need of the mercy of God today! In every continent, from the depths of human suffering, a cry for mercy seems to rise. … In those places where there is less respect for life and human dignity, one needs the merciful love of God, in whose light we see the ineffable value of every single human being. Mercy is needed to ensure that every injustice may find its solution in the splendor of truth. So today, in this Sanctuary, I solemnly wish to entrust the world to Divine Mercy. I do so with the burning desire that the message of God’s merciful love, proclaimed here through Saint Faustina, may reach all the inhabitants of the earth and fill their hearts with hope. … May the binding promise of the Lord Jesus be fulfilled: from here has to come out “the spark that will prepare the world for his final coming.” –Saint Pope John Paul II, Homily in Lagiewniki, Poland, August 17, 2002
