Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18; 1 Corinthians 3:16-23; Matthew 5:38-48. In Leviticus, the Lord
declares his statutes to Moses for the Israelites, calling them to holiness and love. In our second reading, Paul instructs the Corinthians, calling them to holiness as temples of the Holy
Spirit. In the Gospel from Matthew, Jesus preaches a new standard of love and justice, calling his followers to love their enemies.
Domenica 7A Del Tempo Ordinario
From the Pastor's Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Last month, January 21, 2023, the Walk for Life West Coast was hosted here in San Francisco. People gathered in front of the City Hall for the rally. As soon as the event started, a pro-choice group used a sound system that projected a loud noise and pointed it at the pro-life crowd to distract them from listening to the speakers. Although it was an unpleasant encounter, the pro-life leaders called everyone to stay calm, pray for them and continue with a peaceful demonstration. This is a good example of what Jesus calls us to do: love our enemy.
In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches us how to love our enemy as our neighbor. “… An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Jesus tells us, “… offer no resistance to one who is evil.” Jesus continues, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy… but I say to you, love your enemies… So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5: 38-48). We are living in a world that has so many evil activities such as rivalry, revenge, hatred, war, etc. When the evil causes us to get angry, Jesus tells us not to react with anger and revenge. In other words, do not let evil force us to fight back with its own evil acts. Rather we should fight with the weapons that God gives us, that is: mercy, forgiveness and prayer for the ones who are against us.
Jesus gives us the Beatitudes on the mount which guide us to be perfect as God the Father is perfect: to be loving and do not hate; to be merciful and do not seek revenge; to be peaceful and do not fight. Jesus Christ comes to this world to bring peace and love, to reconcile us with God the Father and one another. Jesus reminds us that we are the children of God the Father. And so as God’s children, we are called to imitate Jesus, to bring the love of God the Father into our world. We can help to change our broken world by living our Christian ways, that is to love, forgive, and act with kindness toward one another especially our enemies.
Jesus tells us, “You must be perfected as your Father is perfect.” To follow Christ and imitate him we do not take revenge or getting even and being resentful. We have to live God’s goodness, which is to love our enemies as neighbors and pray for them. The reward will be in the kingdom of heaven.
Have a blessed week!

Particular Items
Lent begins Wednesday! February 22 is Ash Wednesday, and it is not too early to start preparing ourselves for the salutary disciplines of Lent. Every Friday we will have a Soup Supper at 6:00 pm, followed by the Stations of the Cross. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are of course obligatory days of fast and abstinence, and abstinence from meet is obligatory Fridays of Lent. Pope Leo the Great noted the value of communal fasting:
“The exercise of self-restraint which an individual Christian practices by his own will is for the advantage of that single member; but a fast undertaken by the Church at large includes everyone in the general purification. God’s people never is so powerful as when the hearts of all the faithful join together in the unity of holy obedience, and when, in the Christian camp, one and the same preparation is made by all, and one and the same bulwark protects all…”
