Acts 15:1–2, 22–29: Psalm 67 “O God, let all the nations praise you!” Revelation 21:10–14, 22–23; John 14:23–29. Each of today’s readings looks toward the future while assuring us of God’s continuing presence with us. The apostles rely on the Holy Spirit to guide them as to which Mosaic practices are necessary for all Christians. The author of Revelation envisions a new Jerusalem, radiant in the glory of God. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to teach them, to remind them of his words, and to advocate for them. In the presence of the Spirit, let us listen to God’s word.

Dear Parishioners, When an old person knows that his or her death is not far away, he or she calls the children together and gives advice to them: when I will no longer with you, you have to care for and love each other. Jesus knows that he is soon going to ascend into heaven and so he advises his disciples to love one another and leaves his peace to remain with them. Our Easter season is coming to the end. Today’s Gospel of St. John tells us that Jesus reminds his disciples to keep his word by loving one another. Then Jesus gives them peace and promises that he will return. Jesus assured that God the Father will send the Holy Spirit to guide and help them, and us, to continue to share his love and proclaim his teachings to others. Jesus commands us to love God and love our neighbors. Sometimes we think that it is not an easy task, but it is possible. Jesus loves us by sacrificing his life for us and so he urges us to love and even sacrifice our lives for one another. An example: Saint Maximillian Kolbe sacrificed his life for his prison mate. In July 1941, the prison guards found out that one of the prisoners escaped. So they decided to kill ten other prisoners. Hundreds of prisoners came out and lined up in fear and trembling, quiet, not daring to scream. They were waiting to hear their names called. One of them cried out loud, “My wife and children!” From the crowd, a skinny man, St. Maximilian Kolbe, stepped out and requested the guard to let him die for the one who still had his wife and children. We need more heroes who willing to sacrifice their lives to bring peace to our broken world. Every time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, it reminds us of the peace Jesus gave to his disciples and that same peace we will share with one another. During the Communion Rite, the priest says, “Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but of the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever.” Then he greets: “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” Spontaneously, we respond, “And with your spirit.” Then we exchange that peace with one another by bowing our heads, hugging each other, or shaking hands. The true peace that Jesus gave his disciples and us has to start within our hearts. Jesus warns us that to not let our hearts be troubled. If we do not have peace within our hearts, how can we share that peace with others? Our world needs more peace, the true peace that Jesus gave to his disciples and to us. May the love and peace of the Risen Jesus Christ remain with us and our world always so that we can live in peace and witness our Christian faith. Have a blessed week! Fr. Tho Bui, SDB, Pastor
