Isaiah 35: 1-6a, 10; James 5:7-10; Matthew 11: 2-11. In the first reading, Isaiah speaks of a day when the glory and splendor of God will be apparent to all. God will come to save. James encourages the community to be patient as they await Christ’s return. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the disciples of John the Baptist to go and tell John of miracles that have occurred. He then tells the crowd of John the Baptist’s greatness.
Domenica 3A Di Avvento
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. It is traditionally known as Gaudete Domino semper which means “Rejoice in God always”. So we call this Rejoice Sunday. We rejoice because our waiting to celebrate the Birthday of Jesus is closer to fulfillment. We also hope for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. St. John the Baptist called the people to repent, because the Messiah was coming to bring the kingdom of heaven to this earth. As John the Baptist was speaking, the Messiah (Jesus Christ) had already come, and was there among the people. And so, once he heard about Jesus, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one to come or should we look for another?” (Mt. 11:3) Jesus responded to them by asking what they hear and see, “…the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.” (Mt. 11:5). John the Baptist only knew “The kingdom of heaven is coming.” Jesus invited John the Baptist and his disciples to look and see.
We, too, Jesus asks us to look and see. How do we see the kingdom of heaven? A great way to see the kingdom of heaven is to live and to be humble and simple like a child. Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.” (Mt. 18:3-5). There was a mother who was a doctor. One late evening she received a phone call from the hospital for an emergency. They needed her to help a mother who was in labor of delivering a baby. She did not return home until the next morning. When she saw her little son Johnny, she apologized to him for not being with him over the night. Johnny responded, “It is OK, mom. You are a nice mom! I knew that you were helping the lady who delivered a baby.” The sweet and soft sound from Johnny makes her day. Mother and son are living in the kingdom of heaven.
The kingdom of heaven is present when we see love, self-giving and forgiveness for one another. We are waiting to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. Christ promises us that he will come again. We rejoice!
Have a blessed Advent!
