Daniel 7:9–10, 13–14; Psalm 97: “The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.” 2 Peter 1:16–19; 17:1–9. Today we hear three different accounts of the Transfiguration. The apocalyptic vision in Daniel foreshadows the event, featuring many of the same elements: clothing as bright as snow, clouds from heaven, and the Son of man. The author of the second letter of Peter writes as an eyewitness to the event. Matthew gives a descriptive account of that day. Let us heed Peter’s words and be attentive to God’s word and this prophetic message.

Members of the Chinese Apostolate at their
50th Anniversary Celebration in September 2022.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The following paragraph is the last piece of Story of Saints Peter and Paul.
By the 1950s, second generation Italians had begun their flight to the suburbs. The vacuum they created was quickly filled by many of the 20,000 Chinese immigrants who had arrived in San Francisco from Taiwan and Hong Kong during the 1960s. The growing presence of a Chinese Catholic community called for the assignment of a Salesian Chinese priest. In 1977, a scheduled Sunday Mass in Chinese was begun. Today, what was once called “Little Italy,” has become an ethnically diverse parish, which has retained much of its Italian heritage.
Last year our parish Chinese community celebrated their 50th anniversary (1977-2022). The Chinese community remains very active in our parish activities to this day. This past June, we welcomed back Fr. John Lam, SDB to Saints Peter and Paul. I said he comes back because he has served us here before. Fr. John is in residence and helps out Saints Peter and Paul Chinese community and other Chinese communities in the Bay Area. Especially, the elder Chinese parishioners would love to have Fr. John among them since he is able to hear confession in their mother language. We are blessed to have Fr. John with us!
Our church building will be 100 years old next year. We are exciting to prepare for this celebration. Please mark your calendar for November 8-9, 2024.
Have a blessed week!
Fr. Tho Bui, SDB
